Practical Science for Conservators VI: Beyond a Thousand Words: Computational Imaging for Cultural Heritage

In this session Dr. Marc Walton will discuss the aims and goals of the emerging field of computational imaging and how it has come to influence the way we look at and study art objects. In recent years there have been unprecedented advances in scientific imaging hardware with end-to-end integration with image processing and data fusion methods which has resulted in new ways to acquire and view images of artworks. These developments will be illustrated through a series of case studies from work conducted through the Center for Scientific Studies in the Arts at Northwestern University, which, for the last 8 years, has been collaborating with experts in computer science and electrical engineering to realize better ways of undertaking scientific imaging of artworks.
