'The Dead Christ Resurrected: the conservation treatment of a monumental painting by Matthew Harris Jouett'
Andrea Chevalier and Wendy Partridge, ICA - Art Conservation
Registration ends on the 20th at noon.
Andrea Chevalier and Wendy Partridge will speak on the history and conservation treatment of The Dead Christ Mourned (The Three Maries) by Matthew Harris Jouett (1788-1827). Jouett, a portrait painter from Kentucky, studied briefly with Gilbert Stuart who considered him a favorite pupil. The painting is the largest and only known religious work by Jouett. The painting was in Jouett's studio at the time of his death, and the reason for its atypical subject is not known. It came into collection of the Archdiocese of Louisville in the mid-19th century. By the 1970s it had been put into storage, and its connection to Jouett and Kentucky art history had largely been forgotten. When recent serious damage was discovered, a dedicated volunteer at the Archdiocese Archives spent several years researching the painting and raising the funds for the complex and time consuming treatment that will be discussed in this presentation.
This program will be free to all members of either MRCG or CACG. You do not need to live in the Midwest or in the Chicago area to be a member of MRCG or CACG. Registration will be up to 24 hours before the event, not after. This will give us the time to process any last minute request for new memberships.
